Music serves as a multifaceted medium, integrating linguistic and artistic elements to convey emotions, ideas, and narratives that transcend conventional communication. This study examines how contemporary Original Pilipino Music (OPM) artists employ rhetorical devices -including metaphors, personification, imagery, hyperbole, and symbolism- to communicate emotional depth, emotions, and meaningful messages. Focusing on four songs -“Aphrodite” by The Ridleys, “Ride Home” by Ben&Ben, “Tangerine Boulevard” by IV OF SPADES, and “Intertwine” by Over October featuring The Ridleys- the research utilized qualitative textual analysis to identify patterns, themes, and symbolic expressions within the lyrics. Results indicate that metaphors effectively bridge abstract concepts with tangible experiences, personification animates emotions and environments, and hyperbole intensifies feelings, enhancing listener engagement and comprehension. Each song demonstrates how figurative language transforms lyrics into a literary medium capable of evoking reflection, empathy, and aesthetic appreciation. The study concludes that rhetorical devices are integral to OPM’s communicative and artistic impact, enabling artists to convey nuanced, emotional and sincere narratives. These findings underscore the literary significance of OPM lyrics and provide a framework for understanding the intersection of language, music, and human experience in contemporary Filipino music.
