Abstract

With the paradigmatic changes in language teaching, the emphasis shifts towards intercultural communication. As linguistic competence is not enough anymore to navigate diversity of contexts, influenced by migration and globalisation, the importance is placed on intercultural competence (IC) as an essential ability to communicate effectively and appropriately. In turn, telecollaboration gives opportunity to establish intercultural contact, during which IC is applied. The purpose of this systematic literature review is to analyse the goals of implementation of telecollaboration and to explore the benefits and challenges of using telecollaboration for the development of intercultural competence in language learning. The review selected 17 articles of relevant literature through the PRISMA declaration. The findings were organized through thematic analysis into three major themes: 1) IC development via telecollaboration; 2) IC assessment via telecollaboration; 3) Interaction in telecollaboration. Based on the findings, the benefits and challenges of using telecollaboration are highlighted. The findings suggest that telecollaboration can facilitate meaningful intercultural encounters with culturally diverse interlocutors, providing a productive context for both the development and assessment of intercultural competence. Telecollaboration has the potential to support performance-based assessment, affording participants the opportunity to receive feedback from a range of cultural perspectives. These findings indicate that, when thoughtfully designed and implemented, telecollaboration can make a substantive contribution to the cultivation of intercultural competence.
